Mayor's Parlour Visit:
10th Bath Brownies
We walked from our Brownie hall to the Guildhall. In the Mayor’s Parlour we had biscuits and orange juice round a large round table in the middle of the room. We shook hands with the Mayor as we went in and said ‘Good evening Madam Mayor’.
The mayor’s assistant told us lots of interesting facts. Out of over 700 mayors of Bath, there have only been 15 lady mayors – they can choose to be addressed as ‘Mr Mayor ‘ or ‘Madam Mayor’. There were the signatures of all the mayors on display, and also photos of the mayors. We were able to hold the badges of office of a previous mayor and mayoress. On the table was a silver box with peppercorns which the university had to pay the City of Bath for the land the university is built on.
There were 2 arm chairs in the parlour and the Queen had sat on one of them when she visited Bath. We took it in turns to sit on the chairs. We also had a chance to be a ‘mini mayor’ or a ‘mace bearer’. The mini mayor put on a red robe and processed round the room behind 2 mace bearers carrying wooden maces. The real gold maces were in a display cabinet.
The Mayor was a very nice lady and each mini Mayor and mace bearers had their photo taken with her. She gave us each a pen, photo and leaflet about the Mayor’s Parlour as we left. On the way out we saw the ballroom which had 3 massive chandeliers – they were really cool!
You can see a picture of our visit here.
We really enjoyed our visit to the Mayor’s Parlour!
