World Thinking Day:
Bath Division
On Wednesday 22nd February, members of Girlguiding Bath Division were joined at the Pavilion by the Mayor of Bath, Cllr Peter Metcalfe, Bath MP Don Foster and Girlguiding Somerset North County Commissioner Mrs Pam Clements, to celebrate World Thinking Day. This special day is an occasion for Girl Guides and Girl Scouts throughout the World to remember each other and their commitment to international friendship. The idea started in 1926 and 22nd February was chosen as it marks the joint birthday of the Founder of Scouting and Guiding Lord Robert Baden-Powell and his wife, World Chief Guide, Lady Olave Baden-Powell.
Brownies and Guides from across Bath brought their unit flags and the Bath Division and Somerset North County standard colour parties were formed by three Young Leaders from Rush Hill and three Bath Guiders respectively. Members of the youngest section - Rainbows, Senior Section members, Guiders, Trefoil Guild members and other adult helpers and supporters, joined them. During the celebration, tokens of friendship and peace were exchanged, the girls learnt about Guiding centres around the World and Pat Heynes gave a thought provoking talk, which was followed by the renewal of the Guide Promise.
A collection was taken which will go to the Guide Friendship Fund (GFF) which is used to support the work of Guide Associations in other countries. This can include providing emergency relief such as that sent to the Pakistan Girl Guides after the devastating earthquake in 2005. The GFF also supports longer term projects, such as the development of Guiding in Cambodia and a project run by Guides in Togo to provide fresh water in their villages.
Girlguiding Bath provides the opportunity for girls and young women (aged 5 – 18) to have fun and make friends, whilst enjoying a programme of varied and challenging activities. It has almost 900 members who meet weekly as Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers. In addition, there are a number of Young Leaders who help with the younger sections.
We want to give every girl and young women the opportunity to join a unit and would welcome offers from women interested in becoming volunteer leaders or helpers to join our current team of Guiders. Other opportunities to be involved include volunteering to help as an administrator, specialist or depot helper. To find out more, please contact us using our online form.
